The Baltic Exchange Handysize Index (BHSI) was formally launched in 2007 and is a measure of the strength of spot freight earnings for smaller dry bulk vessels, currently based on a standard 38,000 dwt bulk carrier (since 2 Jan 2020). The index, tracks rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels that ferry dry bulk commodities. The Baltic Dry Index is not restricted to Baltic Sea countries or to a few commodities like crude oil. Instead, the Baltic Dry Index takes into account 23 different shipping routes carrying coal, iron ore, grains and many other commodities. The Baltic Dry Index became a prophecy of sorts amid the global financial crisis. Its predictive powers since then have been patchy.
