Online grooming is when someone uses the internet to trick, force or pressure a young person into doing something sexual - like sending a naked video or image of themselves. This is wrong. Someone who’s grooming others online will sometimes build their trust before talking about doing anything sexual. What is online grooming? Online grooming typically involves an older person attempting to get close to a child with the intention of sexually abusing them. While grooming is an issue that pervades the real world too, the internet provides perpetrators with a platform where they can easily pretend to be someone else due to the anonymity of online profiles. Grooming is about building a relationship with a child in order to later abuse them. This can be far easier online. Games, social media, live streaming platforms and chatrooms enable people to make contact with children to try to groom them.
